Okay, we got our tree on the 7th of December. And watered it 2 times since then...... Now its the 23rd, and its smells like poop. We thought it was the dog, but we say no poop or pie. Also all the branchs on the tree are hanging down. So is it supposed to smell bad???

My trees never smelled bad, even when older. Sounds like something is rotting.

Did you put anything in the water to preserve the tree? That's usually recommended. Yours sounds like it's already dying, and is rotting.

No. It should smell like pine.
Listen, you have to put it in water and one plain asprin.

Floralife from the flower store or grocery if they carry flowers will keep it alive longer.

Next year consider a fake tree. They look real and you aren't killing a tree.

We spray all of our smaller pines, spruces and firs with a mixture of rotten eggs and synthetic fox urine, and then tag them to publicize what we've done, to discourage theft leading up to the holidays. Out in the cold the smell isn't noticeable at all, but take a sprayed tree inside where its warm, and you'll wish you had never even heard of Christmas.

I wonder if something similar occurred to your tree before it was cut, either naturally (an animal repeatedly urinating on the tree), or artificially to prevent theft. If it happened some time ago it may have just taken awhile for the smell to come out. There's no reason for a tree that was green three weeks ago to be in that condition now. Trees take a lot longer than that to rot, and a dead, dry tree will likely not have much of a smell at all.

You certainly haven't watered it enough. When you bought it (or first brought it home) you should have given it a fresh cut (cutting off an inch or so of the bottom of the trunk). This allows it to absorb water -- and most trees from tree lots absorb a GALLON of water during the first 24 hours.

After that, it will drink a gallon every 2 or 3 days. Failing to give it a fresh cut, or letting it go dry in the holder, lets the natural pine sap seal the trunk (preserving as much moisture as the tree has)... but the heat and warmth in your home are more than that seal can protect against.

The nasty smell may be from the stagnant water in the holder. Use a turkey baster to suck the yucky water out, and replace it with clean water (although it's definitely too late to revive the tree). A hit of bleach in that water will kill the bacteria and smell. Careful not to get bleach on the carpet, tree skirt or gifts!

The tree won't perk back up, you let it get too dry for too long.

    Hello,
One of our biggest industries here in Oregon is Christmas tree's, worked in the industry for, well lets say a couple years LOL!
Your tree should not be smelling like dog. What may have happened is your tree was used as a marking object for a dog when it was bailed up after harvest.

Christmas trees need watered DAILY inside a house. Tree's used for Christmas trees are grown in our wet climate to the west. These need lots of water! Hopefully the trunk of your tree had not dried up to the point it wont receive any more water.

Most people jut throw out there tree when Christmas is over. I like to strip the bark to use as popori.

For the stench you are experiencing look at the trunk see those round "pimples" or boils? Pop these, smell your hand. This is what these tree's are bought for, this smell is so strong it should take away the nasty smell.

    Good luck.

this happened to me as well. The tree is well watered but it stinks like bad cheese. It's horrible smell. It's the first time I ever had a live tree, but I have no idea what went wrong...
