I have used starting fluid a lot of times and also carbuerator cleaner in the can to on regular lawn mowers, but would it be the same for the ride-on lawn mower.

You just spray some on the filter right before starting. I never remove the filter to do it becuase the lawnmower could backfire through the carb and burn you or cause the lawnmower carb to catch on fire.
I do this with my little 4 wheeler also.

You can damage your engine with ether if you are not careful. Tune your engine up so you don't have to use starting fluid.
