I have bougt some Begonia bulbs, they have one or two fleshy shoots on them, are these the future stems or the roots. If they are the stems do i cover the whole bulb with soil or do i leave that fleshy bit sticking out.Thank you in advance.
I know the root goes down, but i am not sure if the fleshy bit is the root or the stem. |

Plant all bulbs pointy bit up! Fleshy bits are the roots. Cover the whole lot with a little bit of soil, about 1cm, and water them well.

Cover the entire bulb with soil...the point on the bulb faces up, the semi flattened part of the bulb goes down. Sometimes you can see the beginnings of roots coming out of the root portion, and the beginnings of a stem coming out of the point, but not always.

Roots down!! Yes fleshy stems are future stems. Cover whole bulb about 11/2 inches deep.

Nearly every bulb has a sort of tapered part to it, and these are always pointed up, although in reality, you could just toss the bulb in a hole and the stems will break through. YES, the bulb needs to be covered with soil, and are usually planted at least 2 - 3" deep, normally there are specific planting instructions on the package, if in doubt contact a local Nursery, they will be happy to help out. It is also wise to put a bit of fertilizer at the bottom of your hole, Miracle Gro for flowers will do a decent job, just add a teaspoon or so before planting. It will give your plants an extra little boost.

the fat/flat side of the bulb goes down. The pointed end is the top and goes up.
