6 FT privacy wood fence - one side is smooth the other side has the support brackets - would you install it so the smooth side is facing in towards the yard or outside towards the neighbors? I'd prefer to install it smooth side facing out so I can hang birdfeeders and small decorations on the support brackets facing the inside of the yard. Which way would you install it and why? Thanks !

Best way is good side out. Many local codes require this so the neighbor is not forced to look at the bad side.

Good side out. It wouldn't be long before all my planting obscure the inside of the fence anyway....

I think it would look best the the support brackets inside the yard.

I'd build it with the smooth side out, if for nothing else but security reasons. It's easier to scale a fence if you have the support brackets to use as foot holds, and much harder if they aren't there.

There aren't any laws in regard to this, but the convention everywhere is that you give your neighbor the smooth side. If you do it the other way it's going to look odd because no one else does it like that.

The owner of a fence is usually establish on which side the poles are mounted, they should be mounted on your side, so put the good side to your neighbours

might be one of of those regional answers...in Texas it always seems to be the same... the fence separating the neighbors has the good side facing your yard, use the fence to enhance the look of YOUR back yard...with the fences sections that the public views, face those good side out, once again to enhance the look of the house from the street

Good side out. Whether it's local codes or a security feature, it's also courteous to your neighbor not to make them look at the "work" side of the fence. It also does make it easier to hang things like potted plants and birdfeeders, and also helps with climbing plants.
